VITICULTURA-MISIÓN BIOLÓGICA

In 1993, the CSIC’s grapevine variety collection was planted in a plot belonging to the Misión Biológica de Galicia (MBG-CSIC). The collection is the fruit of work that began in 1986 at the Instituto de Investigaciones Agrobiológicas de Galicia (IIAG-CSIC), under the direction of Dr. José Luis González Mantilla, and with the help of Dr. María del Carmen Martínez and José Enrique Pérez. Following the death of Dr. González Mantilla in 1992, the work was carried on by Dr. Martínez, who planted the collection at the MBG-CSIC.

In the years prior to its planting, meticulous surveys were undertaken in all of the vinegrowing areas of Galicia and Asturias to locate different vine varieties and examine them in situ. Many of these vines were 200-300 years old, and some represented quite unknown varieties. The MGB-CSIC has a herbarium containing leaves from all these grapevines; it also has a collection of seeds and a great deal of photographic material.

WHO ARE WE

The Viticultural Research Group, founded and directed by Dr. Martínez, came into being in the year 2000. It includes a further four researchers (Dr. José Luis Santiago, Dr. Susana Boso, Dr. Virginia Alonso-Villaverde and Dr. Pilar Gago), and three technicians (Mª Soledad Taboada, Elena Zubiaurre and Iván González).

SCIENTIFIC PRODUCTION

Our group has produced more than 100 scientific and technical articles, several books, and has made many presentations at congresses. We have also supervised doctoral and master’s theses, and bachelor degree projects, etc. We have also selected and transferred grapevine clones to the winemaking industry and taken part in many projects designed to disseminate scientific knowledge.

VARIETIES

The product of work that started over 25 years ago, we now have a living collection of grapevine varieties from different parts of Galicia and Asturias. We have made complete ampelographic descriptions of all these varieties and constructed the ‘mean leaf’ of each. In addition, we have a large collection of photographs and drawings of their shoots, leaves and fruit clusters, etc. We have also determined the molecular profiles of these varieties. Other kinds of data have been recorded as well.

LEAF MATCHER AND MICROSATELLITE
